GETA
Geta is footwear made of wood stepsole and HANAO-straps. In Japan, geta originated in ancient times as a tool for work, and later became a fashionable form of footwear. There are several types of stepsole depending on the shape of the ” tooth”, and they are more suitable for everyday use than zori. Wooden materials include cedar, pine, and paulownia. Tsujiya Honten mainly deals with paulownia geta, which are lightweight, moisture absorbent, and of the highest quality. The value of paulownia geta is determined by the width, number, and arrangement of the vertical grain (annual rings).
ZORI
Zori can be worn in a variety of styles, from formal to casual, depending on the TPO. Both men’s and women’s zori are made of cork or urethane stepsole, covered with a surface made of cowhide or synthetic leather, and then HANAO-straps installed. In addition to leather, other materials for the “omote(surface of stepsole)” include bamboo skin, synthetic leather, canvas, and rattan.
SETTA
Setta are a type of zori, mainly for men, with a “direct-attach” construction, where the leather backing is laminated directly onto the “omote(surface of stepsole)”. These Setta have a woven bamboo skin omote, leather or synthetic leather omote, and a cowhide leather is sewn onto the outsole. Metal studs are driven into the heel. The initials of Setta are used for the character for snow, and there is a theory that Sen no Rikyu, a famous tea master, invented these Setta to wear on snowy days. Another theory is that the name was changed from ‘sekida’ (‘seki’ means a seat) because they were worn during a tea ceremony.
