FEATURE

Handmade crafts by artisans, one pair at a time

Geta’s paulownia wood is printed color part, and only sumi (black) ink is used for the glazed finish of Ukiyo-e GETA” Tsutaju”. This enhances the outline lines characteristic of Japanese painting and creates an exquisite three-dimensional effect. The Tsutaju series is truly an Ukiyo-e to worn.

Of course, HANAO-straps is Tsujiya Honten a skilled craftsman’s installation.
You can also choose your favorite HANAO-straps for installation in the store.

The joy of wearing the spirit of Edo’s genius producer “Tsutaju”

Tsutaju” is Tsutaya Juzaburo, the publishing king of Edo. He was the man who nurtured numerous Ukiyo-e stars such as Utamaro, Sharaku, and Hokusai, and published masterpieces that will last for generations to come.

In addition to Ukiyo-e, he also had a string of hits with caricatures, kyoka, and was an excellent producer with a keen sense of taste and business acumen.

This time, three of Sharaku’s masterpieces and three of Utamaro’s masterpieces will be made into men’s and women’s Geta with the Tsujiya Honten name on them.

Limited to 50 pairs of each type of order production

Tsujiya HontenThe original Ukiyo-e GETA” Tsutajuseries” are special products that will be produced in limited quantities up to 50 pairs of each type.

Production begins after receiving an order, and each pair is finished by a craftsman. An edition number is also placed on the sole to indicate that this is a limited-quantity project.

If I go to the store, do you have it in stock?

This product is only available as a sample for display in our stores. The product will be made upon receipt of your order (prepayment) and will be completed in approximately 10 business days, depending on the number of orders, and then delivered to your store or by courier service.

How long does it take to complete an order?

Standard turnaround time is apporoximately 10 business days. However, it may take twice as long, depending on the degree of congestion. If you have a preference for a delivery date, please let us know your desired delivery date on your order as soon as possible.

Delivery will be at a storefront in Asakusa or by EMS courier service. Please be aware that it may take a few days for delivery to reach you.

Can I choose the size?

Both men’s and women’s wear are available in sizes M, L, and LL.
The approximate relationship to foot size is as follows

Traditional Japanese Footwear is finally adapted to your feet through HANAO-straps adjustments. If you order in-store, our craftsman will check the characteristics of your feet on the spot. If you order online, please describe the shape of your feet and your preference for installation, along with the size of shoes you normally wear.

For your information, Traditional Japanese Footwear should be correctly sized so that the heel protrudes about 1 cm from the stepsole and the HANAO-strapsshould be installed a little tighter, so that the heel does not go beyond the thumb and index finger. However, it depends on whether you are used to wearing Geta or not and on your preference. Our craftsmen will be happy to discuss this with you, so please let us know what you want.

HANAO-straps, can I also choose the one I like?

Yes, we do have a selection of these in-store. If you order in-store, we can match HANAO-straps of your choice from HANAO-straps in-store. However, the price may increase depending on HANAO-straps.

For online orders, we basically leave HANAO-straps to you since there are so many HANAO-straps that it is difficult to put them all on the website. If you have a specific color, material, or image you would like, please let us know in the comments section when you place your order. We will try to make it as considerate as possible.

Will other Ukiyo-e be added in the future?

Production of this series will end after 50 pairs each.

At this time, we have no plans to add new patterns, but we may consider them depending on the response and the volume of the request.

Can I still buy in 2026?

This project is a special project to commemorate the broadcast of theNHK’s 2025 taiga drama “Belabo(UNBOUND)” and will basically be sold during 2025, but we plan to accept orders for products that have not reached the limited number until early summer in 2026 as well. More details will be announced on our website, so please check back for information.

Tsujiya Honten has been in business for over 100 years, specializing in Traditional Japanese Footwear since 1912.

In Asakusa, Tokyo, the home of footwear, we have long been favored by actors, masters of dance, tea ceremony, and flower arrangement, and other customers who are particular about their footwear.

Temporary store open for reconstruction in 2025
to “Uri-no-ue” just behind Sensoji Temple.

Due to the aging of the building, Tsujiya Honten will be temporarily renting the second floor of a building in Hanakawado, not far from the back of Sensoji Temple, for approximately one year from October 2024.

Since it is above the Hakata Ramen “Urimbo” restaurant, we have named it “Uri no Ue”(means above the Uri) and it is now open for business.

The temporary store in 2025 is on the second floor near the intersection of Umamichi-dori and Kototoi-dori, entering through the side entrance of a ramen store called “Urimbo”. Please pass through the goodwill and go up the stairs.
